3M™ Scotchgard™ Resilient Floor Protector sets the standard for Clane Hospital - March 2014

Few environments put such high demands on hygiene and cleanliness as operating theatres. So when Clane Hospital in County Kildare wanted to improve public perceptions about floor cleanliness, it turned to Industrial Cleaning Equipment (ICE) for help. ICE recommended that Clane trial new 3M™ Scotchgard™ Resilient Floor Protector on one of its theatre corridors where the floors were prone to scratching, scuffing and staining. The hospital was so impressed with Scotchgard Resilient’s performance that it has since applied the floor protector throughout the three operating theatres, corridors and recovery room, resulting in glossy floors which not only look much cleaner but are quicker, easier and cheaper to maintain.

“Using Scotchgard Resilient Floor Protector has enabled Clane Hospital to significantly reduce the time and cost required to achieve clean, shiny floors that reflect its high standards.” Mark Gannon, Sales Executive, Industrial Cleaning Equipment (ICE)

“Scotchgard Resilient Floor Protector is a 100% improvement on what we had before. Now our theatre floors are not only spotlessly clean - they look it too.” Pat Mulhall, Maintenance Manager, Clane Hospital

THE CHALLENGE

Hospital operating theatres mustn’t just be clean – they must be seen to be so. The melamine floors at Clane Hospital are scrubbed and sanitised every day but their appearance suggested otherwise. The problem lay with the traditional acrylic floor finish which was susceptible to scratches, scuff marks and yellowing. Not only did it need to be chemically stripped and reapplied at regular intervals, which was a costly and time-consuming business; but it would quickly revert to looking dull and worn, impacting on the public’s perception of cleanliness. For Clane the choice was to strip the floors more frequently at significant additional cost and inconvenience or find a more efficient solution that would better reflect the hospital’s high standards.

THE SOLUTION

After trying several different products without success ICE recommended the hospital trial 3M™ Scotchgard™ Resilient Floor Protector in one of its theatre corridors. A contractor was appointed to strip the multiple layers of old acrylic coating using 3M™ Surface Preparation Floor Pads. Two coats of 3M Scotchgard Resilient were then applied to the clean melamine, creating a tough, durable protective barrier with a high-shine finish. The contrast between the old finish and the new was so stark that Clane decided to apply the Resilient floor protector throughout the hospital’s three operating theatres, corridors and recovery room.

THE BENEFITS

Thanks to Scotchgard Resilient Floor Protector, the operating theatres at Clane Hospital now have hard-wearing, high-gloss floors which are less susceptible to scratching and yellowing than before. Not only do they look much cleaner and brighter they take less time and effort to clean and maintain, with significant cost savings. Scotchgard Resilient’s hard durable surface is up to twice as resistant to abrasion as traditional floor finishes when tested under laboratory conditions. So Clane can expect to enjoy the benefits for up to a year with minimal maintenance, and unlike conventional coatings which require chemical stripping, Scotchgard Resilient can be spot-repaired with simple scrubbing, making isolated scratches and unsightly scuff marks very quick and economical to remove.
